Summary:
- HIT Description: Patient decision support / Consumer health informatics More info...
- Purpose of Study: To assess the comparability, reliability, and acceptability of electronic versions of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) questionnaires.
- Years of study: 2004
- Study Design: Randomized controlled trial
- Outcomes: Impact on patient satisfaction
- Settings: Two sites, in Seattle, WA and Rockford IL.
- Intervention: 72 subjects with IBS were randomized to either a baseline electronic or paper questionnaire. They completed a crossover questionnaire 24 hours later and a retest of the crossover version at one week.
- Evaluation Method: comparison screening on electronic data capture (EDC) of the following instruments: IBS Quality Of Life (IBS QOL), the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment Questionnaire (WPAI:IBS) and the EuroQol.
- Description: Electronic data capture via a hand-held electronic device with data entry by stylus.
- Quality of Care and Patient Safety Outcome: There were no significant differences between scores obtained by the two modes of administration, nor were there differences in psychometric properties. Ease of use was comparable for the two modes of administration, but more patients preferred the electronic version (47.2%) than the paper version (23.6%). Patients reported it was significantly easier to go back and change answers with the electronic version. No missing data were found in either mode of administration.
