- Settings: This study was conducted in an academically-affiliated fee-for-service family practice that serves an active patient population of about 12,000, seeing 100 patients a day.
- Intervention: Physicians were randomized to receive either a computer-generated notification for 28 common drugs that had generic preparations available and which could result in cost savings to patients or usual care.
- Clinical Outcomes: Generic prescribing outcomes: The authors report that the rate of use of generic drugs increased in the experimental group from 21% to 58%, while in the control group generic rate use increased from only 18% to 23%.
