A National Web Conference on the Outcomes of the Medicare Modernization Act Electronic Prescribing (e-RX) Pilot Evaluation

Event Date: November 02, 2007 | 1:00pm – 2:30pm ET

Overall Purpose:

Electronic prescribing (e-RX) is expected to vastly improve health care quality, safety, and efficiency.  In the short-run however, its implementation has proved challenging.  Health care providers, pharmacists, and pharmaceutical benefit managers (PBMs) have found that successful implementation of e-RX is impacted by workflow, staffing, consumer interactions, and information needs.  They also have found that planning for these impacts is crucial to successful e-RX implementation.

The five participating sites of the Medicare Modernization Act (MMA) e-RX pilot evaluation have monitored and assessed the impact of e-RX in a variety of clinical settings.  In this third Web conference on the MMA pilot projects, a panel of experts convened by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) will present findings related to provider use and adoption, workflow, and the downstream effects of e-RX use.

Ken Majkowski will discuss the experience of RxHub, from both its overall e-RX experience and that of the MMA pilot.  Kate Lapane will present the MMA pilots' findings related to provider training and pharmacy workflow.  Doug Bell and Robert Elson will provide insights into the e-RX systems' effect on providers' workflow and adoption.  All panelists will share strategies that appeared to most successfully promote change and improve the adoption and use of e-RX in real-world clinical settings.
