A National Web Conference on E-prescribing: Overcoming Barriers With Successful Implementation Techniques

Event Date: September 05, 2012 | 1:30pm – 3:00pm ET

Overall Purpose:

Through multiple mechanisms, including the judgment of the continuing education (CE) planning group, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has identified a gap in a health care/public health practitioner's competency within the health IT environment. This series of Webinars is designed to increase practitioners' competencies to improve health care decisionmaking, support patient-centered care, and improve the quality and safety of medication management. The purpose of this specific Webinar is to identify the challenges associated with the electronic exchange of prescription data and what factors contribute to effective electronic prescribing by physician practices and pharmacies. In addition, the projects presented will discuss two toolsets developed for health care provider organizations and independent pharmacies to support more effective e-prescribing system implementation and the challenges surrounding the adoption of e-prescribing of federally controlled substances.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss the major barriers associated with physician use of e-prescribing features such as medication histories, formulary information, and generic alternatives.
  2. Discuss the major barriers to the electronic transmission of prescriptions and renewals as well as pharmacy e-prescription processing.
  3. Identify successful implementation toolsets and techniques that contribute to effective e-prescribing.
  4. Discuss the challenges associated with implementing electronic prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS) and its affect on patient care, risk reduction, patient safety, and information privacy.
