Track 1-I Health IT and Special Populations
Presenters will provide a framework for making decisions about investing in health IT and how to measure the impact of such investments on the health of children, American Indian HIV patients, and those receiving care in critical access hospitals and long-term care facilities. Presenters will also describe how to monitor health care quality and the incidence of medical errors post-IT implementation, particularly in the context of caring for special populations.

Track 1-II EHRs in Outpatient Clinics and Physician Offices
Presenters will describe the characteristics that contribute to outpatient practices successfully adopting EHRs and the key challenges that physician offices face in adopting these systems. Specific system functionalities that are critical for improving quality and safety will be reviewed. Presenters will explain the role of human factors and how to adapt to work process changes when implementing EHRs in the outpatient setting.

Track 1-III Patient Safety in Emergency Care
Presenters will describe a number of approaches to improving patient safety in the naturally hazardous environment of the ED. These methods include simulation-based teamwork training and debriefing to improve ED staff's knowledge and attitudesconcerning patient safety, and implementing a tracking system to reduce waiting times and quicken availability of test results. Throughout the session, presenters will describe the nature of errors occurring in the ED.

Track 1-IV Improving the Safety and Quality of Care for the Elderly
Presenters will describe safety and quality improvement methods for health conditions afflicting the elderly, particularly cardiovascular conditions requiring anticoagulation therapy. Presenters will illustrate a model for developing and evaluating community-wide programs aimed at improving health literacy and patient compliance with respect to anticoagulation therapy. Finally, presenters will discuss how to refine CPOE systems with clinical decision support to prevent adverse drug events in the long-term care setting.
