Team Description

The information learned from the Health Information Privacy and Security Collaboration (HISPC) will be groundbreaking and critical to developing an interoperable statewide and nationwide healthcare information network. Michigan Governor Jennifer M. Granholm has charged the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) and the Michigan Department of Information Technology (MDIT) with finding solutions to barriers that impede adoption of health information technology.  Governor Granholm highlighted Michigan's goal of extending health information technology to every healthcare setting in her most recent State of the State address.

In Michigan, we'll help our health care industry stop depending on your memory and their paper records as databanks.  We are going to use technology to vastly improve the system.  In the future, you will be able to give your pharmacist, your doctor, or the emergency room immediate access to your information, but you will control who sees it and what it is used for.[1]

How to get involved

Essential to the continued prosperity of Michigan will be the ability to create a health information exchange in a fashion that addresses the concerns of its diverse population. For this project, we will leverage the work of the major corporate players within Michigan, compile best practices from the healthcare constituency, and leverage our established Outreach Network. We intend to create a comprehensive, broadly-based team that combines state IT leaders, state community health leaders, all the major healthcare payers, all provider groups, major industry groups. We will solicit input from an even broader stakeholder population at statewide town hall meetings, which, in combination with our work group activity will generate a comprehensive list of issues, and innovative and effective solutions.
