New Health IT Adoption Toolbox for Safety Net and Ambulatory Care Providers

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has published a new resource to support safety net and ambulatory care providers seeking to implement health IT. The toolbox contains a range of resources relevant to the various stages of considering, planning, executing, and evaluating the implementation of health IT. The resources have been compiled from a number of public initiatives as well as resources explicitly created by HRSA for the toolbox.

The toolbox is presented to users in a question-and-answer format. It walks providers through the questions they should consider at various stages of implementing health IT applications, such as disease registries, electronic health records, and computerized provider order entry systems. Links are then provided to Web-based resources that will help providers address these questions. The toolbox is designed to meet the needs of a broad range of providers.

New AHRQ Report on the Barriers and Drivers of Health IT

A new evidence report by HHS' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality shows that there are distinct factors that influence the use and usability of interactive consumer health information technology by the elderly, chronically ill, and underserved populations.

Researchers found that health IT systems that allow physicians to assess their patients' current health status, treatment plan and goals, and provide new or adjusted treatment advice are most successfully used. These systems are effective regardless of the type of illness the patient has, their education or income status, location, or type of technology used.

Barriers to adoption of health IT systems can occur when patients do not see the benefit of using computer or other interactive technologies for self-managing their health problem. Other barriers include time constraints for the patient, lack of trust in the information received, technical problems, and physician unresponsiveness to questions.

Funding Opportunity: FCC Launches Rural Health Care Pilot Program to Create Nationwide Broadband Network for Improving Health Care

The Federal Communications Commission has expanded eligibility in its new rural health care pilot program to include connections to National LambdaRail, Inc. (NLR), in addition to Internet2. NLR is a non-profit backbone provider that, like Internet2, serves government research and academic institutions, as well as public and private health care institutions.

To give applicants time to consider this change, the Commission also extended the deadline for applications to the program by 30 days. The new deadline will be 60 days after the Commission receives approval from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) of the program’s information collection requirements. OMB is reviewing these requirements. The FCC will issue a Public Notice upon OMB approval, which will be posted at http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/rural/rhcp.html.
