A National Web Conference on the Use of Health Information Technology To Enhance Patient Understanding of Health Concerns

Overall Purpose:
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has identified a gap in health care and public health practitioners’ knowledge of health IT using multiple mechanisms, including the findings of the continuing education (CE) planning group. This series of Webinars is designed to increase practitioners’ ability to improve health care decisionmaking, support patient-centered care, and improve the quality and safety of care through the use of health IT. Health IT can be used to improve patient understanding of one’s own health and clinical treatments. The projects presented in this session will discuss the use of health IT and its impact on weight-loss treatment in obese patients, performance of online health management tasks in older adults, and decisionmaking regarding childhood immunizations among parents.
Learning Objectives:
- Discuss the effectiveness of delivering an online version of the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) lifestyle counseling intervention on weight loss.
- Describe a set of cognitive tools intended to enhance the usability of Internet-based health IT applications, particularly by older adult consumers.
- Identify the lessons learned from piloting an interactive social media Web site for parents who have concerns about providing vaccinations to their children.
