New York

Team Description

The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) has been designated by Governor George E. Pataki to lead New York's participation in the Health Information Security and Privacy Collaboration.  NYSDOH has partnered with the state, Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, Columbia University, Syracuse University, Object Health and CalRHIO to form the Health Information Security and Privacy Consortium (the Consortium).  The Consortium includes nationally known legal, health, and technical experts in health information exchange and interoperability.

New York State and the Project Team are committed to individual privacy rights while protecting and improving the overall health of the general population.  The state has strong privacy protections for the health information it collects, maintains, uses and exchanges.  There are two main issues in the privacy and security discussion: first, the impact of health information protections on the ability to share information; and second, the effect of electronic data exchanges on the quality of individual care and on the efficiency and economies relating to the business of health care.

How to get involved

Invitations will be issued to stakeholders across a broad spectrum of disciplines to assure input from different geographic areas in the state as well as provider types.  Participants will have a variety of ways to provide information to the project team: attendance at the statewide conferences, conference calls with ad hoc groups, communication through the state web portal, posting to the workgroup electronic forum and emailing/calling project team members.  In addition, through networking groups, press releases and other marketing tools, information about this project, New York State's participation and contact information will be provided for interested parties.
